Italy is a relatively affordable country for most foreigners, however, things do add up. You have to account for your flight to Italy, transportation around Italy, food expenses, hotel expenses, activities, shopping, and unexpected fees/tickets. There is also an exchange rate when you are buying items with your credit card.
Nonetheless, this should not stop you from visiting this spectacular country. Heck, it never stopped me. I keep going back and I always seem to find something new about the country to fall in love with. Like this summer, I went to to Puglia for the first time, and I was so shocked at how much I loved it. It is my new favorite region.
So let's break down how to budget for your Italy trip.
What kind of traveler are you?
Are you a budget traveler? Are you planning to stay in hostels and eat cheap street food/ cook for yourself?
Are you a luxury traveler? Are you planning on staying in 5-star hotels, eating at fancy restaurants, and taking guided tours?
Are you a mix of both?
It is important to understand what kind of traveler you are before budgeting for your big Italy trip. This will give you a better idea of how much money you need to allocate towards different aspects of your trip.
Book at least 6 months in advance
Book your tickets and accommodations at least 6 months in advance to get the best deals. You can also save money by choosing to travel during off-peak seasons. This will not only lower your costs but also allow you to experience Italy without dealing with large crowds of tourists.
I booked a one way ticket to Italy in march, and it was $500 going from Miami to Milan. I didn’t know yet when I wanted to return, but truthfully I could have saved a lot more money if I booked in January.
