I've come across numerous videos on Instagram and TikTok that showcase a captivating ancient city nestled in the Southern region of Italy. It is believed to be the oldest city in Italy, adorned with fascinating prehistoric caves scattered across the area. When I was planning my trip to Italy last summer, I was determined to include Matera on my itinerary, as it became a personal goal of mine.
In this article I will explain my entire experience there and why it's a must-see destination in Italy.
Introduction
Matera is an ancient city located in the region of Basilicata, in Southern Italy. It has recently gained popularity as a tourist destination due to its unique history and stunning architecture.
The city is known for its cave dwellings, which have been inhabited since prehistoric times, making Matera one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. In 1993, Matera was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.

Some questions I had before going
Are the ancient caves in the city?
No, the caves are located a little outside the center. You can either walk over the wooden bridge (which was closed when I went) or take a vehicle to get there.
Is the city 10,000 years old?
No, the city itself is not 10,000 years old. The ancient caves (outside the center) date back to prehistoric times, but the city was founded in the 8th century BC by the Romans.
Why is the city popular all of a sudden?
The city gained popularity after being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It was featured in a lot of movies (like The Passion of Christ). Since then, it has been attracting more and more tourists every year.
