Monopoli is a beautiful town located along the Adriatic Sea in Italy. Its walls are painted white and compliments the beautiful blue tones of the sea. It's a town with a rich history and the most amazing food.
The town squares are bustling with life, each offering a unique blend of shops, cafés, and trattorias, where locals and tourists alike gather to savor authentic Italian cuisine. The air is filled with the enticing aroma of freshly baked focaccia and simmering tomato sauce, guiding you on a culinary adventure through the heart of this picturesque town.
I truly fell in love with Monopoli, and I am going to explain why.
A little background of Monopli?
Monopoli's history is a tapestry of various cultures and dominations, which have left their mark on the city's architecture, culture, and identity. The area around Monopoli has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it's the Greek influence that stands out when discussing the city's ancient past:
Greek Colonization: In the 7th century BC, the Greeks began colonizing parts of Italy, particularly the southern regions known as Magna Graecia. Although Monopoli itself may not have been a Greek colony, it was certainly influenced by the nearby Greek settlements. The Greeks introduced olives and grapevines to the region, elements that remain central to the local economy and culture.
Byzantine Rule: After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire (the eastern continuation of the Roman Empire) took control of many parts of Italy, including Puglia. During this period, Monopoli would have been influenced by Byzantine administration, art, and architecture, which in turn was heavily influenced by Greek traditions.
Architectural and Cultural Legacy: The Greek and Byzantine influences can be seen in the religious and civilian architecture of the city. Elements such as the use of white lime, the design of churches, and the layout of some parts of the city reflect these ancient connections.
