There are corners of Florence that feel like they belong to another centuryâwhere the Renaissance still lingers in the air and every detail, from the worn cobblestones to the stone-carved doorways, feels sacred.
But what if I told you that scattered throughout this dreamy city are tiny, hidden windows⌠made specifically for wine?
Not a gimmick. Not a trend. These are real, functioning wine windowsâonce used centuries ago during times of plague, and still used today if you know where to look.
Theyâre called buchette del vino, and theyâre built right into the walls of old palazzos. Back in the 1600s, noble families would sell wine directly from their homes, pouring glasses to locals through these little portals without any contact. Centuries laterâthanks to one modern-day pandemicâthey quietly came back to life.
đˇ Imagine walking through Florence on a warm evening, hearing soft music echo through the streets⌠and suddenly spotting a tiny wooden door open in a wall. A hand reaches out. A glass of Chianti appears. Itâs romantic. Itâs wild. Itâs very Florence.
Not every wine window is active today, but a surprising number of them are. Some serve only wine, others offer gelato, aperitivi, or even full glasses of spritz.
I visited them allâsome tucked beside piazzas, others hidden in alleyways youâd easily walk past. A few are so subtle, I nearly missed them even while looking straight at them. And yes, I found the ones that actually still serve wine through the window (not just the ones listed in old guidebooks).
